artist statement

I am an observational painter specializing in contemporary portraiture, still life, and landscape. Working in oil and acrylic gouache, I seek to capture a sense of immediacy, freshness, and intimacy in my paintings.

Through a contemporary approach to portraiture, I explore the rich terrain of individual identity and what is revealed in the intimate moments of seeing and being seen. From the privileged position of witnessing the other, I seek to convey the unique presence of each subject as well as our shared humanity.

With still life, I am drawn to subject matter that is ephemeral. Captured in fleeting moments, these paintings reflect on the transient nature and beauty of life. With landscape, I’ve expanded observational painting to the outside world. I am drawn to landscapes that suggest human interaction with nature.
